The University of Toronto Mississauga’s Department of Management is introducing new mentorship streams that pair students, alumni and faculty through the UTM community. The initiative, part of UTMM Mentorship Programs, is aimed at helping participants exchange experience, explore academic and career paths and build longer-term professional connections.
Key facts
- The new mentorship streams are listed as new for the 2026-27 academic year.
- One stream pairs second-year management and commerce students with management alumni.
- A second stream pairs management alumni with faculty members.
- Student eligibility is limited to second-year management and commerce students newly admitted to POSt.
- Mentor-mentee pairs are set to launch in February and run until April.
What this means for UTM students and alumni
For second-year management and commerce students, the student-alumni stream is designed to provide guidance on career pathways, confidence-building and networking. For alumni, the program offers a way to stay connected to the university while supporting students or discussing graduate education and academic careers with faculty.
Applications are not open yet for student mentees. The program says the student application form will be available in late 2026 or early 2027, and students are told to watch their UTM email for an announcement. Alumni interested in the student-alumni program are instructed to contact Tara Clemens at tara.clemens@utoronto.ca.
- Student eligibility: second-year management and commerce students newly admitted to POSt
- Alumni eligibility: management alumni from any graduation year
- Priority: alumni who graduated within the past five years for the student-alumni program
- Expected format: about three meetings, usually online
How does the mentorship model work?
Accepted participants are matched by interests, goals, experiences and areas of expertise. The department says pairs may be formed as one-to-one matches or in small groups, depending on cohort size and interest. Participants are encouraged to meet about three times, usually online, and use mentorship toolkits and resources while setting goals and discussing academic or professional aspirations.
Why is UTMM expanding mentorship now?
The Department of Management frames mentorship as a way to strengthen belonging, professional confidence and community ties. It says the programs are meant to help students identify possible career paths, help alumni develop mentoring skills and help faculty and graduates stay connected across academic and professional interests.
The new streams sit alongside other UTM mentorship offerings, including the Launch program for first-year students, Grad Connect for students considering graduate school and the UTM Alumni Mentorship Program for upper-year students. UTMM says the broader set of programs gives students and alumni multiple entry points across the university experience.
What should interested participants do next?
Students should monitor their UTM email and look for the application form when it becomes available in late 2026 or early 2027. Alumni who want to mentor in the student-alumni stream can contact Tara Clemens directly. Alumni interested in the alumni-faculty stream can apply using the instructions provided by the department, while faculty mentors are coordinated through the Department of Management.
The inaugural student-alumni stream is scheduled to open to mentors in the fall, with student mentee applications following in January. The alumni-faculty stream follows a similar schedule, with mentor applications opening in the fall and pairings beginning in February.
