Student Internship Spotlight: Madomi Kusano explores sustainable energy innovation in Japan

Published: 3 min read

Date:

Graduate student Madomi Kusano completed a 12-week summer internship in Tokyo with the Institute for Sustainable Energy Policies (ISEP), where she worked on renewable energy research, policy development, and community-based sustainability initiatives. The placement, part of the Munk School Graduate Internship Program, gave her direct exposure to how sustainable energy policy is discussed and put into practice in Japan.

Key facts

  • Kusano’s internship took place in Tokyo over 12 weeks during the summer of 2026.
  • The internship was with the Institute for Sustainable Energy Policies, or ISEP.
  • Her work included renewable energy research, policy development, and community-focused sustainability activities.
  • She also participated in field visits, professional meetings, and public-facing events in Japan.

What this means for Munk School students

The internship shows how the Munk School Graduate Internship Program connects students with organizations working on real-world policy and research questions. For students interested in energy, sustainability, and development, the experience combines academic learning with field-based work and professional networking.

Kusano’s placement also demonstrates the range of opportunities that can come with an internship in Japan: research support, exposure to international experts, and site visits to renewable energy projects. She visited solar installations in places including Nagano Prefecture, Sagamiko, Iida, and Sagamiko Berry Garden, and she represented ISEP at the Global Nature Positive Summit in Kumamoto.

How did the internship connect research and fieldwork?

It combined office-based policy and research work with visits to renewable energy sites, meetings with practitioners, and participation in sector events. Kusano said she was able to explore both the technical and social dimensions of sustainable energy while working in an international environment.

ISEP’s internship program also encouraged interns to contribute to staff research, conduct independent studies, and take part in educational events and networking opportunities. Kusano said the experience gave her access to researchers, policymakers, community energy leaders, and professionals from organizations including the Asian Development Bank.

What did Kusano do during her time in Japan?

During the internship, Kusano delivered a guest lecture on Canadian sustainability practices at Chiba University with Munk School peer Ryan Holloway. She also spent time in Kyushu learning about regional sustainability initiatives and met with organizations and officials discussing sustainability efforts in Japan.

Beyond the professional work, she said the summer allowed her to spend time with extended family in Japan and practice Japanese while working alongside interns from around the world.

Why does this internship matter?

The placement is significant because it shows how graduate internships can help students build practical experience while contributing to ongoing sustainability conversations. In Kusano’s case, the internship linked university training with current work in renewable energy policy and community-based innovation.

It also highlights Japan as a place where students can observe how solar power, agriculture, research, and public policy intersect in local and regional sustainability projects.
